Linda,

I used a photograph, blown up to 8.5 x 11. My first step was scaling the canvas to match the photo. From there it was the monotanous exersise of zooming in and out to make sure the figure ground relationships were accurate. I've got a little trick I use to produce another painting: I take the paintbook and merge it with the photograph using brushes. This brings proportion to center stage. If the PB is 'off' from the photograph it really shows up when the photo is added. But there are ways to use the differing proportion to give the piece an unusual appeal. Strangely, and

Doesn't look forced at all~ looks thoughtful and perceptive. I clean forgot that PaintBook had a grid. Wise choice. When you say it had been "in your head" for a long time, it makes me wonder: were you working from memory, from a photo, or did you go back and work on site? I ask, because I find it very challenging to frame my paintings when I'm on site. It all looks good to me, and usually my framing decisions are made by running out of canvas space...

This piece was in my head for a long time, I hope it comes off as fluid and not too forced. 3 and a half hours and I was starting to get happy with it... finally! ;) I used the grid to help with scale, with just so-so results. It WAS a long session, but on a traditional canvas it would have taken a lot longer. Glad you really checked it out, Linda, Thanks!

Geez, Mike, you are amazing. I have such a hard time getting the proportions I want in Paintbook. I keep getting surprises when I lift my stylus or finger at the end of the stroke. Just curious - how long do you think you spent on this piece? Warmly::::Linda
